Sound signals are a bit like morse code with a range of signals made up of short and prolonged blasts in distinctive combinations. Each distinct signal has a specific meaning.

• ​​Rule 32 says that a short blast means one second duration and  a prolonged (long) blast means 4-6 seconds duration. The pause to separate blasts is not explicitly defined but 2 seconds can be inferred

• Rule 33 explains what equipment is required on vessels of various size classifications
  

• Rule 34 defines the signals that must be made when manoeuvring and for warning others of intended actions

• Rule 35 sets out our obligations when operating in restricted visibility

• Rule 36 is for attracting the attention of another vessel and states that you must something that cannot be mistaken another signal according to the rules –  morse Uniform is a good choice

• Rule 37 is for distress situations and its morse SOS
