Definition of equipment

There are various pieces of equipment used onboard vessels for sound signalling, technically they are called appliances, and they are defined in Annex III of the regulations

  • Appliances are defined by their sound characteristics (frequency and audible range) and considered to be either a whistle, a bell or a gong

  • Different appliances are used in different combinations depending upon the size of a vessel and the situation

  • Note that there is an exception for vessels <12m in length which states that, rather then having specific equipment, they can use any means of making the prescribed signals

Everything you need to know about sound signalling as prescribed by the Collision Regulations Rules 32 to 37.
